Since we're long past dorm days and needing classroom-ready knits for fall, we've turned our back-to-school shopping eyes toward the home.

This is the time to exchange summer-bright pillows and accessories for trappings in fall's warm, natural tones. Think of it as home design to help us look forward to sweater weather. But it's not all nesting and wool throws, we've got obligations--to all those newlyweds whose weddings we celebrated this summer, without giving a gift just yet.

THREE EASY STEPS TO A WARMER HOME.

Light a fire. Prodding a fire wakes up our survival senses, and DWR fire tools prove that survival is a modern matter. Their range of Fireplace Tool Sets costs between $248 and $748.

Cozy Up. Maine-based designer Angela Adams knows that the best way to savor a chilly fall evening is stretched out on a thick wool rug in front of the fire. Her cozy Corice Rug delivers warmth in rich, winter ready jewel tones; $998.

Get Lit. Nothing goes with fire lounging like a good book. George Nelson's How To See offers a new, design-centric perspective, and makes a great addition to the coffee table for $29.95.

The Ferro 5 Piece Tool Set gives a modern look to an age-old process. The classic wool throw with a contemporary twist in wine hued, Asian inspired style. The graceful, limited edition decanter from Riedel, for long fall nights with a glass of red.

GET THE FALL FEELING

Color Coded. Fall hues make a chic statement year round. And for those who fret about adding color, going with the natural earthy hues of the season makes spicing up the home life a bit easier.

Some can't go wrong suggestions:

Kartell's Holly Golightly-esque Mademoiselle chair in orange, green damasked, or for the color advanced, Missoni earth tones; from about $700.

George Nelson's Petal Clock, a fun alternative to the Ball version; from Vitra for about $275.

Michael Graves' 20th anniversary tea service, an Alessi limited edition for about $399.

Herman Miller's Eames Plastic Armchair Rocker in red; expect to pay about $375.

WEDDING BLUNDER WONDERS

Dinner. Late sending a gift to a couple who loves to cook? Try the Let's Gel Chef's Mat. Twelve pounds of soft gel will keep their feet frisky while they cook up their favorite fall comfort foods. $99.95 in four colors.

Dining. Help lovers keep the fire burning with the Lugano Candelabra. Actually four separate pieces, these candlesticks look great scattered or grouped as a centerpiece; $98 from Red Envelope.

Drinking. Created to commemorate Riedel's 250th Birthday, the Amadeo Lyra Decanter gets top marks for form and style. Each limited edition decanter is made of mouth-blown glass with 25% lead crystal and retails for $249.95 at Wine Enthusiast.

Done. The Cherry Blossom Throw warms a room with a punch of fall color. As if they need a reason to cuddle; $240.
