If teenagers inhabit your home you've become acutely aware of the changes occurring. Fashion, style, and individuality have taken over... and it has spilled over into their bedroom.
To help transform Rebecca's childhood bedroom into a hip hangout, homeowner Susan enlisted the help of designer Greg Horowitz. First step - start from scratch. "Nothing was saved," says Horowitz, who worked directly with the teen and her very grown-up design sensibility. "It is important for the teen to be part of the process, empowering them to make decisions and create a space to reflect who they are becoming."
To make the bedroom a fun, cheery, and exciting space for Rebecca and her friends, a fresh color palette of crisp white, bright orange, and turquoise was chosen.
To achieve a clean and modern look, Horowitz painted the entire room white, including existing ceiling beams that flank a white chandelier. To the right of the entrance is a seating area or cozy reading nook, outfitted with an upholstered Easy Chair from Modernica and stackable acrylic tables.
On the wall opposite Rebecca's work area is a striking orange-upholstered Escape bed from Ligne Roset and side table and lamp by Jonathan Adler. The dresser from Kid's Supply is brightened by the orange lamp from Artemide. Graffiti artist Peter Mayer's Graffiti Dogs add punches of fun and color above the bed.
To create additional seating for friends -- and hide an unfashionable radiator -- Horowitz dressed the double windows in turquoise and white and added an upholstered cushion. Want to get even more comfy? Grab an over-sized orange pillow!
The room is completed with a clothes closet and private bath -- two must-haves for any teenage girl.
When designing for teens Horowitz follows a simple rule - design for their developing individuality, creating a space they will still love in the years to come. "Kids are so connected to trends and their own identity is changing so fast. That is the real challenge and the fun!"
