Lone-Star Living

By Allison Jaworski

The Tuscan style was out when two Texas homeowners with a flair for entertaining envisioned their home.

The layout of the home seems very conducive to entertaining. Was this imperative to the design of the home?

Absolutely! The owners really wanted a seamless transition between inside and outside for entertaining. It is all clean lines and there is no unused space.

What was the inspiration for this design?

The couple wanted to have tons of light and clean lines instead of the typical Tuscan style.

Is this design typical of the area?

The design is very atypical for the Austin area, where the homes surrounding this home are a sea of Tuscan. The Bryant residence truly does stand out!

What image did the clients want the exterior of the house to convey?

They owners wanted a contemporary look, but with a Texas Hill Country Flair. To achieve this native materials were used, including native Texas limestone and Texas shell stone quarried in Austin.

What were the client’s must-haves?

The clients really wanted to have tons of windows, an open clean look with natural light and a great home to entertain.

The kitchen has a very natural, earthy finish. What materials were used to achieve this?

AG&M furnished Selina Gold limestone tile from Egypt for the majority of the interior floor paving. To achieve continuity and that seem-less look, the kitchen counter tops and back splash are a polish finish Apollo Storm granite. The cabinets are made of unstained walnut because they had enough color and movement on its own.

The exterior has a real depth. What materials were used?

Goldstone granite was chosen for the exterior paving, pool coping, exterior flooring, and fireplace because it performs well in exterior applications and has the soft coloring of limestone. The paving and coping is chisel finish and the outdoor fireplace is clad with split face Goldstone to match. This color selection allowed the colors to blend between the interior tile and outdoor paving, yet withstand outdoor use.

The back patio and pool area will see lots of use with the Texas climate. What added features make the space complete?

Split face granite and steel columns with vertical lighting help to distinguish spaces. Modern fans were installed to cool down hot Texas days, as well as a granite fireplace for those cool Texas nights! A full barbecue and granite counter tops were installed for dining alfresco. Lastly, all doors are opened from the inside out to create more seating, gathering space, and that airy quality!
