What was the inspiration for this makeover?
Modern Country -- a simple kitchen with expressive materials and detailed in functionality for today's lifestyle.
What type of vibe did the homeowners envision in this space?
This is an active kitchen! The mood is meant to be casual with the focus on family entertaining and intimate weekend breakfasts with a view of the ocean through the windows.
How difficult was it to incorporate all elements of a high-end, functioning kitchen in a galley space?
We worked magic to place the items in a way that married form and function. At the very beginning we discussed that the downfall of most modern kitchens is the over abundance of cabinetry with a complete lack of focus on aesthetics and style! It was eye opening for our clients, who understood perfectly after a few visual references. We promised to incorporate the majority of their must haves -- extra counter space, wall ovens, electric cooktop, a large sink and easily maintained finishes -- while delivering solid design that infused the kitchen with a spirited representation of their personal style. The result was as revealing about them as it was concealing of all the items hidden behind doors.
What type of flooring was used and what were the additional must-haves?
We used cork flooring from Expanko and custom palm wood beams made of Plyboo. The 'must-haves' were extra counter space, abundant cabinet space with roll outs and easy access, wall ovens, electric cooktop, a large sink and easily maintained finishes.
What space-saving techniques were used?
Our solution to the unsightly view of a neighbor's wall was to relocate the window and add natural roman sheers to filter the daylight. By rearranging the layout of appliances and cabinetry we were able to provide them with maximum storage space which further benefits the functionality of the kitchen’s narrow space. In the end, the clients maximized their living space in this kitchen, despite what we might consider its small size.
Is there more counter space across from the main wall?
The counter space was a particularly sensitive subject. Our client was implicit that she wanted more space for cooking and prep than the existing set up had allowed. We accomplished this by organizing all the vertical elements (fridge, wall ovens, pantry cabinets) at the end of the kitchen, so the main counter space is around the range top on one side of the kitchen and the sink on the other side. This way we were able to leave large sections of countertop open instead of breaking them up haphazardly. The additional return at the end of the counter provided bonus extra space they never dreamed of and acts as an area for guests to lounge over wine as activity takes place between sink and stove. That last part is crucial -- sometimes counterspace is wasted by the people leaning against it. Everything and everyone needs a place in the kitchen that makes sense.
Can you briefly describe the process for this makeover?
We delivered a space the homeowners found easy to live in with the bonus of maximum style. We presented 3 options for finishes for them to choose between. The first two were their own requests based on exact colors requested and a few key materials provided independently and, the option they eventually chose was our wild card based on a less literal translation of the inspiration they original presented to us. We thought the hybrid was a subtle yet striking option, with a warm neutral palette that worked with the existing color story in adjacent rooms and created a wonderful flow from one room to the next. After the concepts were approved, we detailed out the cabinetry assisted in clarifying the designs with their contractor and watched the beauty unfold.
What was the biggest challenge/obstacle for this project?
Re-use of existing appliances, a narrow space, maximizing storage, and an unsightly view of neighbor's wall.
What special features does this kitchen posses?
All of the cabinetry by Omega custom cabinetry provided extra storage space, including large roll out drawers and double pantries. The architectural beams added dimension and unite the kitchen to the house. The back-painted glass backsplashes and modern cafe curtains with shear ribbon-clad lent a sensual appeal to the room.
My client was charmed by the drapery fabric. She loved how "sexy" it was! When she said that, I knew we had designed a kitchen that went beyond function. Everyone should feel sexy when they are cooking!
