August is the biggest birth month, and new parents are eager to rifle through the cutesy stuff and find unique, modern accents for their little one’s room. Lucky for them, we’re on the hunt too, and we’ve come up with a trove of modern looks to withstand the test of time…
The A-Frame by Our Children’s Gorilla
An eco friendly modern doll house made of Valchromat, a wood fiber board colored with organic dyes, the A Frame design allows easy access for little hands and a blank slate for developing those modern, minimalist design sensibilities. About $235, includes shipping.
Steamliner, Albert, Albert Jr and Aeroplane by Our Children’s Gorilla
Odes to industry and exploration, these retro-modern hooks banish cutesy themes and bedroom clutter. They’re made of precision laser-cut recyclable, powder coated metal (with dull edges), so the hooks, as well as the design, have ensured longevity. $24- $42, includes shipping.
Baby Hammocks by Mawok and Kanoe
Hammocks keep babies swaying in comfort, and can be used instead of a more traditional crib. The two we like are by Mowak and Kanoe. Mawok can be easily moved around with a bracket that hooks atop any door, and also has a wall mounting option. Kanoe must be attached to a ceiling with an eyehook, or has a strap to be strung between two trees for outside resting. Kanoe is made of organic cotton and comes in four solid colorways. Mawok’s deigned with colorful monkey print for a livelier feel. The major difference between the two though, is the amount of time your child can use them. Kanoe should be lowered to within 2 inches of the floor when junior begins to try to climb out. Mawok can only be used until the baby is able to sit up. Both coast about 300.
Chick Chair by Roebuck Studio
Perfect for eco-minded parents, the Chick Chair is shipped flat packed, fits together by tabs and slots and is made of Baltic Birch plywood covered in an earth-friendly, safe shellac. The Chick Chair is best for kids ages 2- 6, and comes in 6 colors, natural or a combination of colors. $220
The Kasseli Piggy Bank
Suze Orman preaches that it's never to early, and there's never too little money to save. She must be right, as piggy banks have been a must have baby gift for generations. Never wanting to rock the boat too much, we're on board with the traditional gift - with a twist. Our pick for baby bankers is the Kasseli. The design eliminates angst felt when corks go missing from coin banks – it doesn’t have one. This bank box must be constructed to deposit and deconstructed to withdraw. As an art object and interactive puzzle for older kids and adults, and a simple coin bank for the little ones, Kasseli fits the bill as a piece to be treasured lifelong. $119.
