Handmade Modern Holiday Decor

04 November 2009

Handmade for the holidays may seem like a good idea in this cash-strapped climate, but often something goes awry between the vision, the execution and the glue gun.  This year, I'll keep my good intentions, but leave the actual crafting to the professionals. I've found some home decor items that true artists made and that can be mine with just the click of a mouse. Well, except for one - but it's totally doable, even for me.

A Modern Holiday Wreath
Thanks to the stylists at CB2, anyone who can string a bead can make this colorful holiday wreath.  They were gracious enough to post the simple "How To" on their blog, with links to purchase their ornaments, of course. Check it out at CB2.

Green Christmas Tree
A three foot tall table-top tree can be great for those with limited space. This cedar version will appeal to minimalists, modernists and environmentalists, too. A sculptural alternative to the real thing for those who can't give up decorating. $255 at Silvercocoon. Also avalaible in a 6ft version.

Snowflakes
Snowflakes symbolize the season, and ceramicist Shoshona Snow creates modern porcelain versions to float through your home. Black and white and dressed with a dab of color, these harbingers of cold weather may actually warm up your space. $16 each.

Modern Garland
A fresh take on needle dropping boughs, these handmade felt garlands are a more lasting and whimsical approach to traditional holiday decor. $14 for a length of 80" from Anastasia Jamin.

Time for the Holidays
This is a year-round item whose time to shine comes every December. Made of bamboo, Splat delivers a punch of color, useful time keping abilities and an affordable price tag: $49, by Pilotdesign.
