The white living room lacked the sense of serenity and style that the homeowners desired.
The bright yellow walls and glass blocks did not reflect the airiness of the surrounding gardens.
15 years after migrating from Hong Kong to Singapore, the homeowners called on Stanley Tham to bring a modern Asian flare to their condo.
Having a deep-rooted love of Chinese culture, as well as long accrued Chinese paintings and artifacts, it was important that the home reflected and infused the Asian elements with a touch of Oriental style. Tham’s challenge -- to rejuvenate the bland space in two weeks without disturbing the homeowners.
Located near Bishan Park, the homeowners wanted their condo to preserve the same sense of serenity and lightness contained in the lush greenery of the park . Tham began by covering the living room walls with muted brown paint, paired with chocolate-hued furnishings. Not wanting to obstruct the living room’s view of the park, a sheer taupe curtain covers the window.
As typical in Singapore homes with integrated living and dining rooms, the dining area is located at a corner adjacent to the living area. The back wall in the dining room was constructed to mask the ineffective glass blocks and small window that offer neither light nor a view. A cutout in the wall features the homeowner’s glassware, while their collection of artwork is featured on the dining and living room walls.
Covered in the same beige paint and outfitted with a chocolate dining table and chairs, the existing cream marble floor in the dining room reflects light from the ceiling fixture, creating a clean, sophisticated space.
By infusing existing furnishings and artwork with a new color palette, Tham transformed this bare space into a modern Asian den of tranquility and sophistication.
